Welcome Back to Spartans Daily!

Welcome back! As the fall quickly approaches, Spartans Daily returns to keep you posted on all things MSU. Let’s kick off the season with some quick hits on what’s been happening.

Football

The MSU football team finds itself just outside the top 25 in all of the preseason polls as it heads into the 2009 season. However, a favorable schedule which excludes Ohio State and welcomes Iowa, Michigan, and Penn State to Spartan Stadium, could keep the Spartans atop the Big Ten standings.

The Spartans also shook up the local media last week with an announcement that they will not only play all of the local MAC schools consistently for 10 straight seasons; but, they will actually travel to Eastern, Western, and Central within those seasons. Those opposed to this move think this presents a no-win situation for the Spartans; however, supporters argue that this move is more economical for the state of Michigan. My thoughts: this is a joke. I don’t think MSU Football is hurting for money, and last I checked, college football was about competing and winning against strong opponents.

Finally, in the latest addition of alumni who have shamed my degree, Plaxico Burress was sentenced to two years in prison following a guilty plea in a New York courtroom. Plax, of course, was arrested last year for concealing a weapon in a New York night club. If you recall, Burress shot himself in the leg by mistake. Oops.

Basketball

Just a quick hit: the MSU Basketball team released its 2009-2010 schedule this week. The schedule, which includes 9 teams that played in last year’s NCAA tournament, begins with exhibition games against Northwood and Grand Valley State before opening up with Florida Gulf Coast and a visit from Gonzaga. Highlights include an early tournament game against Florida, a trip to Chapel Hill for a National Championship rematch, and a game at Texas before opening up Big Ten play.

The Spartans will have a slew of games on ESPN this year, which means a lot of 9pm games for those of us that work early!

Again, welcome back to Spartans Daily, this promises to be a good year for Spartans’ athletics.
