After Rout; Morgan-less Spartans Must Win Big Again

There was about one minute left in the first half of Wednesday night’s basketball game between the Spartans and the Gophers when I looked over and saw my wife sleeping on the couch-unfortunately I had to miss my first conference home game, so I was watching the game from my living room. Wow! That’s a first, I thought to myself. Normally, my wife is just as wired about the game as I. Often times; she will be much more nervous and “loose-lipped” when it comes to expletives being hurled at the screen than I am as well. But here she was, sound asleep during the first half. However, that was a good thing.

Smack Talk

So, here I am sitting at home on a Tuesday night, wondering just what team I’ll see show up at the Breslin Center tomorrow night to take on Minnesota. I hope to see the fiery, talented, tough defending Izzo team that I saw play on a few occasions this year. But, alas, I am worried that I won’t.

Raymar Morgan is probably going to sit out again, and Goran Suton is going to be playing a recently injured knee-Suton suffered a hyperextension in practice on Monday. But, I still don’t think this is why I am worried. I think we still have plenty of talented players on this team to beat another good team. However, I find myself worried anyway. The reason: this Spartan team is not playing with fire lately.

Think about it: when was the last time you saw Travis Walton sprint down the court after a strong MSU offensive possession, turn around, and slap his hands hard on the floor to fire up his defense?

No Super Sunday for the Spartans

For the second time this season, the Michigan State Men’s Basketball Team has fallen to a team with a cat for a mascot, and even more, managed to uncharacteristically lose at home. The first time, it was Northwestern’s first win in East Lansing since 1984. Today, it was the first time the Penn State Nittany Lions have ever won a game in East Lansing.

Mercier’s STATE of the Big Ten Address

Hello, my fellow Big Tenians. We once again find ourselves immersed in a “beat ‘em up, and outlast ‘em” Big Ten season. And as we reach the midway point in conference play, it is time for my State of the Big Ten address. Let’s first start by looking at the conference as a whole.

No Sophomore Slump

The Michigan State basketball team has put last week’s loss to Northwestern far behind them thanks in part to the fabulous play of two of their sophomore guards. Point guard Kalin Lucas continued his solid play tonight against Iowa with 24 points, scoring at least twenty points in his last three games.

Additionally, sophomore guard Durrell Summers proved once again that he deserves to be in the starting lineup, contributing with 21 points, including 14 in the first half. Summers was also a spark that the Spartans needed to overcome a second half comeback.

The Spartans took a 13 point lead into the break, and led by as many 22 before closing out a 71-56 final score.

On the Road Again…

Willie Nelson said it best, “On the road again, I just can’t wait to get on the road again.” But, normally these words would never be spoken by an athlete, except maybe this year’s Spartans. The road warrior Spartans will once again travel to another team’s home when they play the Iowa Hawkeyes tonight.

Update: Hockey Players No Longer Spartans; Raymar Morgan Still Ailing

Players Dismissed

Corey Tropp and Andrew Conboy will no longer be playing hockey at Michigan State University, Coach Rick Comley announced just one day after suspending the two. “It was a tough decision, but the right decision,” said Comley about the dismissal.

The rest of the Spartans’ team sent a get-well card to Wolverine Icer, Steve Kamfer, after the “violent attack” over the weekend.

Senior goaltender Jeff Lerg remarked on the unfortunate incident:

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” said Lerg.

Message Delivered; Two Spartan Icers to Sit Remainder of Season.

The message sent by Coach Rick Comley and his staff at MSU was loud and clear on Monday afternoon: there will be no goons on this team. Comley suspended two Spartan hockey players for the remainder of the season on Monday, following an on-ice incident that took place against the University of Michigan on Saturday afternoon.

Cory Tropp of Grosse Pointe Woods and Andrew Conboy of Minnesota, will both miss sit out the regular season, and any post season activities. The incident, in which U-M junior Steve Kampfer was violently thrown to the ground by MSU’s Conboy, and then violently slashed across the neck by Tropp, came in the waning moments of a heated rivalry match up at Yost Arena. Conboy received a double-minor penalty, and Tropp received an ejection from the game.

Summer, Summer, Summers Time

If the Fresh Prince had been a Spartan, he would have been proud on Sunday. In what seemed like a must win game for Michigan State, an unlikely hero stepped up to the forefront of the pack to lead the Spartans into battle against the host Buckeyes in Columbus.

Sophomore Durrell Summers had a much needed career game as the visiting Spartans downed the Bucks 78-67. Summers was starting in place of Kalin Lucas who benched at the start of the game due to academic reasons.

Coming off of a disappointing loss, the Spartans used Summers’s energy to overcome a double-digit first half deficit.

Cat-Nip; Spartans Shocked at Home

Northwestern stuns No. 7 Michigan State at home(Yahoo!)

Many streaks came crashing to a halt inside the Breslin Center Wednesday night. Most notably was the streak of 28 straight wins at home; the third best streak in the nation. However, they say all good things must come to an end, and in this case, it may just be what this team needs.
